Joyce is a girl on a mission: she wants John Ford Kang (JFK) to notice her. After several disastrous attempts shes is offered a new solution: her aunt, Gomo offers her the opportunity to have plastic surgery to create a more western and "beautiful" look.

This book is filled with humorous incidents: the dinner at the family restaurant where she tries to impress John Ford Kang and the yearbook signing poke fun at Joyce's self-absorption. But underlying messages of self image, cultural identity, and family loyalty are also gently explored.
