It's a normal day in Perdido Beach, California. Then, suddenly, everyone over the age of 14 disappears. Only children, aged thirteen and under remain, and some of them have developed supernatural powers.
But without the adults, there could be chaos. Who will take care of the infants, where will necessities such as food come from? And, perhaps most important, who will be in charge?
This book sets forth a "what-if" situation regarding a nuclear accident, but gives it a science-fiction treatment. The struggle for control of the town is intense, and a little reminiscent of Lord of the Flies. The characters are well-drawn, and there is a lot of action, made more intense by the characters' strengthening superpowers, such as speed, shooting fire and the ability to teleport.
The ending leaves room for a sequel, with the leading good and bad guys still around, and the situation unresolved.
