We Are the Ship: The Story of Negro League Baseball
by Kadir Nelson
A history of Negro League baseball told through the eyes of a fictitious team player, this book is brimming with information. However the strength of this book is the illustrations. The images are so real, so powerful and so compelling that you are immediately drawn in. I loved poring over the pages, learning more about each player as a viewed the strong images of outstanding athletes. The narrative sparkles in some spots and seems a like a tedious list of names, dates, and events in other places. The author has carefully researched his subject that includes end notes, an index, and other documentation.
