Fergus is digging for peat with his uncle when he discovers a body in the bog. His life is already in turmoil, as is life in Ireland in the 1980s - he is sitting for his examinations for a place in university, his brother is a hunger striker in prison, his father and uncle favor the Irish nationalists and his mother is trying to keep the family whole. Enter a girl named Cora and her mother, who stay with his family while studying the body which seems to speak to Fergus in his dreams.
This book has a great sense of place and time, describing recent history in a reachable manner.
