Sunrise Over Fallujah by Walter Dean Myers

A young man from Harlem joins the army, against his family's wishes, and finds himself in Iraq in 2003 as part of a civil affairs unit. He works on figuring out why he is there, why there is war and who the good and bad guys are while trying to stay alive.

Robin Perry, the young man, is the nephew of Richie Perry, the protagonist of Myer's Fallen Angels. I didn't find this book as terrifying as Fallen Angels - but it is current, and for kids who think Viet Nam is ancient history, the story of a young soldier in a confusing war is very powerful.
